-It’s a modern play on the original Black Madonna (Virgin Mary) Mother & child paintings that were created in 13th & 14th century in Catholic & Orthodox European countries. Usually there’s a mother and son (representing Jesus & Mary), but I wanted to make one of a mother and daughter!
In my modern twist, the mother & daughter are the roses stemming from the concrete. Look closely & you can even see thorns! A play on the late Tupac Shakur’s “The Rose That Grew From Concrete” poem and poetry book: that even coming from the hood, roses and all things beautiful still grow. A celebration of blooming despite obstacles, motherhood, & divine femininity ✨? I am a concrete rose. ❤️
